99 roses prove fugitive’s downfall

A FUGITIVE who returned to Shanghai to see his girlfriend was detained at Hongqiao Railway Station on Monday night after the 99 roses he was holding attracted the attention of police.

The man, surnamed Li, took a train to Hongqiao Station, arriving at around 10pm with the flowers to surprise his girlfriend.

However, the bouquet caught the attention of railway police who checked his identity card and discovered that he was a fugitive.

Police said Li was a Shanghai local and worked in Xuzhou City in neighboring Jiangsu Province. He was wanted by Jiangsu police in connection with forged value-added tax invoices.

Li admitted forging invoices, but said he had no idea that he was wanted by police.

He said he was in steady relationship with his girlfriend and had just returned to Shanghai to give her a surprise with the bouquet of roses.
