7 arrested for alleged SMS fraud
SEVEN people have been arrested for sending fraudulent SMS messages targeting disabled people in Shanghai in a case in which dozens of people have reported losses of thousands of yuan, police said yesterday.
The alleged scammers, based in Longyan city in Fujian Province, claimed to be government officials offering subsidies and were uncovered by the Shanghai Telecommunications and Online Fraud Squad which was established in April.
The squad, along with police, called or texted about 55,000 people to warn them and froze more than 430 bank accounts containing about 100 million yuan (US$15 million).
In the seven months since the squad was established, money lost in telecom and online scams has plunged about 40 percent over the same period last year.
