5 detained after fake taxi swoop

FIVE people were detained in Shanghai for allegedly stealing taxi meters, toplights and plates to create fake cabs using vehicles that were no longer roadworthy, police said yesterday.

Police in Chedun Town in Songjiang District said they received reports on the morning of March 23 from five taxi drivers who complained that their meters and plates had been stolen the previous night while their taxies were parked in residential complexes.

Police found that similar thefts had occurred in other towns in the district, and in some cases toplights had also been taken.

A special task force was formed and an examination of surveillance videos soon yielded some possible suspects, police said.

The videos showed two men in a fake taxi driving near the crime scenes, stealing the items from the legal taxis and then returning to Meilin Village in the Pudong New Area, where seven cars were found painted like taxies and bearing plates that had been reported stolen, said police.

About 60 officers swooped on Wednesday night, catching the five suspects as they drove illegal taxis out of the village.
