5 bike riders pulled up for using main carriageway

POLICE in Yangpu District are hoping to reduce the possibility of traffic accidents happening by targeting cycling enthusiasts who ride their bikes on the road instead of along cycle lanes.

“We haven’t seen any serious accidents involving racing bikes on the motor lanes,” said Song Bo, a local traffic police officer.

“But vehicles might crash if they have to give way to them,” he said.

In a clear sign of their intent, police on Sunday evening issued fines of 20 yuan (US$3) apiece to five cyclists caught riding along Songhu Road in New Jiangwan.

The fines are not new, nor is the restriction on where cyclists can ride.

One of the people fined told Shanghai Daily that Jiangwan is ideal for “racing” cyclists as there is not a lot of traffic, and the roads have good surfaces.

“I use the bike lanes when I can, but I’m constantly looking out for pedestrians,” said the rider, who gave his name only as Shao.

Cyclists take to the streets because there are no alternatives, he said.

“We would prefer to ride in a stadium, but there aren’t any,” he said.
