40% of clothes on ‘sale’ fail quality tests

MORE than 40 percent of clothing sold at discounted promotional events at eight big department stores were found to be of substandard quality, the market watchdog said yesterday.
A total of 100 batches of clothing were checked and 41 of them had failed quality tests, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said.
The Atlantic Department Store and Wujiaochang Printemps Department Store in Yangpu District had the highest substandard rate of clothing — 80 percent and 73.3 percent respectively — among all the eight stores.
The Super Brand Mall in the Pudong New Area had 46.7 percent substandard rate, while Jiuguang Department Store and Westgate Mall, both in Jing’an District, had 39.9 percent and 17.6 percent respectively, the bureau said.
The garments failed tests for excessive formaldehyde, poor color fastness, fiber content, down content and instructions.
A batch of shirts labeled “clreimens,” made by Shanghai Ouju Trade Co, were found to contain 132 milligrams of formaldehyde per kilogram, far exceeding China’s national standard of a maximum 75mg/kg. The shirts were sold at Westgate Mall.
Excessive exposure to formaldehyde can lead to headaches, dermatitis, respiratory disease, eczema and poisoning cases, doctors warn. Also, 26 batches of clothing had issues with fiber content.
A batch of vests labeled “Mancalabo” and sold at Jiuguang Department Store claimed to be 100 percent merino wool, but on testing they were found to contain only 15.2 percent of wool, with the rest being polyester fibre, nylon and acrylic fibers.
A batch of down jackets made by Shanghai Cartelo Clothing Co and sold at Wujiaochang Printemps Department Store contained only 88 grams of down content as against 104 grams marked on the labels, the bureau said.
Another 5 batches failed for poor color fastness. Clothes with poor color fastness can bleed dye onto the skin, which can be harmful, officials said.
These department stores are in Jing’an, Changning, Yangpu and Minhang districts and in the Pudong New Area.
Promotional events sell inventory goods with deep discounts but some of them have quality problems, the bureau warned.
