3 quizzed over hospital incident
A DRUNKEN man hurt a police officer while holding a workmate hostage at the emergency unit of Shanghai No. 9 People’s hospital yesterday morning, police said.
The man, surnamed Wu, entered the clinic about 5:30am with two friends. He was holding two knives and asked to be treated immediately for wounds suffered in a drunken brawl.
He then argued with his boss on the phone and then with a receptionist over the cost of the treatment.
Annoyed, Wu held a knife to the throat of one of his colleagues and pushed him behind the reception desk.
The hospital ordered the evacuation of dozens of patients.
Police officer Liu Ruoyu approached Wu from behind and with help from colleagues overpowered him.
Liu was hurt in the incident, but not seriously.
Wu and his colleagues, who originate from Hunan and Fujian provinces and work as waiters in Shanghai, were taken into custody for questioning, police said. The case is being investigated.
