3 hurt by knife-wielding man in city center attack

A 37-year-old man with a history of mental illness was taken into custody yesterday after attacking people with a knife on the pedestrianized section of Nanjing Road, police said.

A 59-year-old traffic assistant called Fang Jiang and two members of the public were injured when the unnamed attacker began slashing at people, apparently at random, they said.

Fang suffered three slashes to his face, the longest of which was 20 centimeters, local news portal thepaper.cn reported.

The incident began about 12:30pm close to the intersection of Xizang Road M. and Nanjing Road E.

Fang said he saw the attacker and kicked him when he saw him waving a knife in the air, but the assailant then turned his attention to the traffic assistant.

With his face covered in blood, Fang took off his belt and began thrashing his attacker until police arrived and subdued the man.

“I couldn’t let him hurt innocent people,” Fang was quoted as saying.

He and the two other people injured in the incident are being treated at Changzheng Hospital.

Much of the incident was captured on video, which is available to watch online.

A member of the public told Shanghai Daily that a foreign man disarmed the attacker.

The assailant is a migrant worker who appeared confused when interviewed by police, thepaper.cn reported.

He was quoted as saying that he stabbed the people because he thought they were staring at him and that they didn’t like him.
