2-minute text alert for traffic offenders

STARTING from next month, drivers can receive text messages regarding their traffic offenses within two minutes after they are committed instead of having to wait a few weeks, police said yesterday.
Currently, about 410,000 drivers who have registered at the Shanghai Traffic Police portal sh.122.gov.cn or through the “jiaoguan12123” app are texted by the police only when their offenses are confirmed, but that can take over two weeks.
“With the instant messaging system we hope to remind the drivers of their offenses as early as possible,” said Xia Liang, a police officer with the Traffic Police Technology Department.
Just 600 of the 3,200 traffic police cameras in the city are linked to the new system, which only covers a few offenses such as illegal lane switching, speeding and using bus-only lanes.
Xia said more cameras will be included in the future as well as more types of offenses.
Drivers who receive the text messages need to look up the final decision on their offense on the website later to confirm that it has not been changed.
“Sometimes, for example, the cameras catch the drivers illegally changing lanes, but it’s actually because they have been told to do so by a police officer who’s dealing with a traffic accident,” Xia said.
