2,453 smuggling cases
SHANGHAI Customs uncovered 2,453 smuggling crimes last year, involving nearly 15 billion yuan (US$2.4 billion), authorities said yesterday.
The number of offences was up 8.5 percent on 2013, while the sum involved was almost 43 percent higher. Cases included 91 in the Shanghai free trade zone, involving a total of 4 billion yuan. More than 115 kilograms of drugs were seized in 28 smuggling crimes — including one conspiracy to bring 70 kilograms of drugs from South America into China through the Yangshan Deep-Water Port in Shanghai last September. This was the largest ever drug trafficking crime busted by Shanghai Customs.
