200 new wind turbines on island

OVER 200 new wind turbines are up and running on Chongming Island, officials said yesterday.
The turbines will be able to generate enough clean energy to provide 70 percent of the island’s power. They have been connected to the city’s power grid so that redundant electricity can be supplied to other parts of the city, while the city’s grid can supply the island, said Liu Jinsong of the China Electric Power Research Institute.
More turbines and solar energy panels will be built across the island to supply downtown Shanghai and other areas, Liu said.
