20% of students dabble in stocks
ONE in five college students in Shanghai play the stock market, according to a recent survey.
And of those, more than half had dabbled in the market for less than six months, the study by students of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics found.
Researchers polled nearly 500 students at some 20 city universities.
Another 20 percent of the young investors stepped into the market between six to 12 months ago, while only 10 percent had more than 2 years’ experience, the study found.
The rush of young blood seems to have been triggered by the buoyant Chinese stock market earlier this year, said researchers.
During the first six months of the year, the Shanghai Composite Index nearly doubled, passing 5000 in June.
The study found that nearly 60 percent of respondents put less than 10,000 yuan (US$1,566) into stocks, most of which came from their own savings or from parents.
It was not clear from the study what effect the recent turmoil in China’s stock market has had on the number of student investors in the city.
