20 Japanese internment and POW camps identified

HISTORIANS have identified the locations of 20 internment and prison-of-war camps created by Japanese troops in Shanghai during World War II.

These feature on a map released yesterday by researchers at Shanghai Normal University.

“Most of the camps have been mentioned by historians, but few of them know the exact locations,” said Su Zhiliang, a history professor at the university who led the group,

“Our findings are important as some Japanese are denying their nation launched aggression on other countries. We need to provide concrete evidence to tell people the true history.”

The largest internment camp was at Shanghai High School, which held 1,756 foreigners from 11 countries between 1943 and 1945, said Su.

The Longmen Building there was known as Longhua Internment Camp.

It held 1,584 Britons, 39 Belgians, 37 Americans, 32 Australian and 24 Canadians, as well as people from South Africa, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, Portugal and Norway, according to the research group.

The Qunxian Building in East China Normal University, at that time Great China University, was an internment camp for 1,056 foreigners, said researchers.

Clergy were interned in six camps, including an abbey now used by the Xuhui District government. There, 30 Canadians and four Americans were held.

And a building of the Shanghai Academy of Social Science, on Huaihai Rd M. was used to intern 79 nuns from six countries.

The team gave the location of five prison-of-war camps, holding prisoners from China and abroad.

Three now serve as the People’s Liberation Army’s No.411 Hospital, Tilanqiao Prison and the Shanghai Naval Museum.

Researchers also identified 24 “comfort women centers.”

“The buildings are important evidence for us to remember the painful past and cherish the peaceful life now,” said Su.
