2 murdered over theft suspicion

A MAN alleged to have beaten a neighbor and her 11-year-old daughter to death because he suspected they had stolen money from him has been detained, police said yesterday.
The suspect, a 40-year-old surnamed Han, had been drinking through the night before the attack around dawn on Friday in the Pudong New Area, according to officers.
Believing his neighbor, a 42-year-old surnamed Zou, and her daughter, surnamed Ou, had taken cash, Han broke into their home around 4.30am armed with a stick, said police.
When police arrived 30 minutes later, they found the mother and daughter lying on the ground with severe injuries. Zou was pronounced dead at the scene, while her daughter died in hospital.
Han was held at the scene.
