2 killed, 20 injured in downtown bus crash

TWO people were killed and 20 injured after a public transport bus crashed into an elevated road pillar in downtown Shanghai yesterday afternoon.

Among the seriously injured was the driver of the bus No. 44 and a 2-year-old baby girl.

The incident happened at a zebra crossing near Dingxi Road under the Yan’an Road elevated way. Police received a call at 11:40am and firefighters and medical staff rushed to the scene immediately.

It was still unclear what caused the accident, but since it happened so close to the zebra crossing there were suggestions that the bus may have tried to avoid jaywalkers leading to the crash.

But the police discounted the possibility, saying there were no evidence to suggest that the bus was avoiding people on the road.

A woman passenger died on the way to Huashan Hospital, while another, a 44-year-old woman, was declared dead at Huadong Hospital at 3:30pm despite undergoing emergency surgery.

“She was already in coma when they brought her in,” Huadong Hospital vice president Zheng Songbai told Shanghai Daily. “She suffered serious liver hemorrhage which needed surgery.”

Zheng said Huadong received a total of nine injured passengers, most of them in their 40s and 50s. Six of the injured are still in the intensive care unit at Huadong and Huashan hospitals.

The baby girl was rushed to Shanghai Children’s Hospital. She had a deep wound in the lung and a part of her scalp had ripped off, needing surgery.

Most of the other injured passengers suffered fractures.

The front of the bus was badly damaged and some torn by the impact. A baby stroller could be seen in the middle of the bus.

Firefighters had to pull out the bus driver, who was trapped in his seat.

“Among the 11 injured people sent here, one was dead, and three of them serious,” said Ma Xin, vice president of Huashan Hospital. “The most serious was the driver, who suffered injuries to his chest, brain and had fractures in his arms and legs. He is in intensive care right now.”

The driver, a Shanghai native surnamed Shen, had over 20 years of driving experience.

Zhu Wei, a passenger who got on to the bus about a minute before the accident, said the bus had just taken a turn from Dingxi Road into Yan’an Road before crashing.

“I was sitting in the second last row and putting the transportation card into the bag,” she said. “When I looked up, the bus was grazing past the barriers on the road. I temporarily lost consciousness for a few seconds after the crash.”
