2 held after video of car chase goes viral

A FORMER racer has been detained along with another driver for racing on Middle Ring Road on Saturday afternoon, police said yesterday.
Zhang Zhendong, a member of the racing team “Lingrui 300+” and a former China Touring Car Championship winner, clocked 187 kilometers per hour in a Porsche GT3 near Zhongyuan Road, where the speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour.
Another driver, Yang Zhengxing, a car mechanic, tried to chase Zhang in an Infinity car from Handan Road Tunnel to the Pudong exit of the Jungong Road Tunnel, police said.
Video logs of the car chase from Yang’s car were uploaded to the internet on Saturday evening and went viral.
The two drivers covered about 11 kilometers in less than 10 minutes on the elevated road zigzagging among traffic.
They are likely to face multiple charges for illegal lane changing and speeding. Both of them could be put in detention between one to six months and fined.
Yang told police he did not know Zhang personally but chased him when he saw a Porsche speeding in front of him at the Handan Road Tunnel.
“All I thought about was to race the Porsche for sheer excitement,” he said.
Zhang said he was very familiar with the Porsche GT3 he was driving because he had tested it on a race track.
“Many other drivers on the road had to brake when I made my way past them,” he reportedly told police.
Interestingly, they were not the owners of the cars. Both of them were driving other people’s cars, police said.
The Porsche with a Jiangsu plate belongs to a person named Yang Ke, who is a resident of Wuxi city. He said he met Zhang at a Porsche club.
Yang said he had rented the car to his friend who is Zhang’s father and the owner of an auto 4S shop.
The Infinity with a Shanghai plate belongs to Li Yuandan, who said she parked the car in the 4S shop, owned by her friend Chen Jiajia. But police said Chen was also in the car when Yang was speeding. Yang works for Chen.
Both owners said they were not aware that Zhang and Yang would use their cars for speeding.
