2 firms caught polluting just-been-cleaned rivers

TWO firms have been fined for discharging sewage into rivers that have just been cleaned up during the city government’s campaign to improve waterways.

A petrochemical company, based in north Baoshan District, was fined by 160,000 yuan (US$23,230) for discharging waste water directly into a river, Shanghai Water Authority said.

A construction company in Chongming District was fined 100,000 yuan for polluting a small river during construction work in Houjia Town.

The Chongming company installed a pipeline to release muddy water into the river. The water authority said the river had just been cleaned up and removed from the list of “polluted rivers.”

The petrochemical firm in Songnan Town, Baoshan, was found to have been discharging sewage into nearby rivers for years. It failed to set up a sewage pipeline to connect to the water treatment plant.

The township water authority had twice warned the firm to stop violating regulations but it had declined to abide by a deadline offered by the water authority to clean up its act.

Citizens are encouraged to report river pollution via the city’s 12345 hotline. The city government aims to clean up all polluted rivers and other waterways by the end of the year.
