2 arrested over toxic pills sales

TWO people accused of making and selling slimming pills containing a banned ingredient have been arrested.

Songjiang District prosecutors said sibutramine, an appetite suppressant that had been banned in China since 2010 because it could trigger strokes and heart attacks, had been used in the manufacture of the pills.

Police raided an underground workshop in Xinqiao Town on April 6, when the owner surnamed Liu was packaging the diet pills.

Thousands of the packages were seized and tests showed they contained sibutramine.

Investigation showed Liu didn’t have a license to produce medicine, the prosecutors said.

During police interrogation, Liu said a woman surnamed Han had supplied the pills. She was detained two days later.

The two were arrested for making and selling toxic and harmful food.
