16 theaters planned for the Dream Center

EXPECT to see a lot more actors treading the boards in Xuhui District.

Sixteen theaters will be built within the Dream Center, a new cultural and recreational hub, by the end of next year to address the shortage of venues in central Shanghai, officials said yesterday. They will serve as venues for dramatic productions, concerts and other performances.

Six large venues, including a 2,500-seat, multi-function theater and an 1,800-seat interactive concert hall, will be built along with 10 small venues along the Huangpu River.

“The area will become the city’s major gathering area for theaters, which are quite inadequate in the downtown area now,” said Jin Jianhong, the head of the district’s cultural development office.

The district has many performing arts groups and organizations, but has few theaters, Jin said.

Due to a shortage of venues, a recent puppet show directed by Chinese artist Ma Liang and produced by a Xuhui-based company, for instance, had to be performed in a theater in the Daning area in neighboring Jing’an District, according to Jin.

Xuhui District has already built several theaters to meet the increasing demand for stage dramas and other live performances, and they have proved to be popular with local audiences.

Stan Lai Sheng-chuan’s Theater Above opened in December 2015 in Metro City, a city landmark known for its giant sphere, and tickets for stage dramas at the popular venue sell out fast.

Meanwhile, the district’s Wanping Theater, built in 1988, is slated to be demolished and rebuilt, the government has announced. The new theater, scheduled to open in 2019, will become the home venue of the Shanghai Opera House and Shanghai Yue Opera House.

The Dream Center, where most of district’s theaters will be located in the future, is expected to open in 2018 in the West Bund area along the Huangpu River. It will become a cultural and recreational landmark, the government said on its official microblog account yesterday.

The center, which will cover about 463,000 square meters after its completion, will be home to riverside Lan Kwai Fong-style bars, eateries and clubs.
