15 arrested for organizing prostitution in Pudong hotels
FIFTEEN suspects have been arrested for allegedly organizing prostitution in hotels in Pudong and blackmailing clients for money, police said on Friday.
Among the suspects are four ringleaders, four prostitutes, four advertisement distributers and three drivers, police said.
Operating mostly in budget chain hotels such as Home Inn, Hanting and Motel 168, the ringleaders asked the prostitutes to call them from the hotel rooms and then threatened the clients over the phone to make them pay more than the agreed prostitution fee, according to the police.
Police said the ringleaders often threatened to beat the clients up or block their way out of the hotel.
Three victims reported to the police in March and April with one of them allegedly made to pay over 2,500 yuan (US$364) to the gang.
One of the suspected prostitutes in this case, a woman surnamed Chen, told Shanghai Daily in the detention center for suspects of criminal offenses in Pudong that she was driven to the clients up to four times a day and made 20,000 to 30,000 yuan a month.
“If I failed to get additional money from a client, my boss would take 20 to 30 percent off the due money I earned from the service,” she said. “Half of the clients were not willing to pay more in the end and I had to leave without the money.”
Another suspect, a man surnamed Yang who owned up that he distributed advertising cards of the prostitution service in the hotels, said he was paid 100 yuan a day to distribute hundreds of cards every day, usually accompanied by a person who was supposed to ensure that he didn’t cut some slacks.
A police officer surnamed Shi who has been handling the case told Shanghai Daily that some suspects of the gang live in hotels so they have access to all floors to distribute the cards, as elevators in most hotels require room cards.
“The police regularly inspect hotels with regards to their security measures, but a common problem is that some hotels leave their emergency stairs open to everyone, which could be utilized by illegal business such as prostitution,” he said.
