14 detained on suspicion of organizing prostitution
FOURTEEN people suspected of being members of a gang that organized prostitution in Shanghai have been detained, police said yesterday.
The group is accused of providing sex services from four apartments in Changning, Xuhui, Putuo and Jing’an districts.
Most of the suspects were detained on April 1 following coordinated raids on the four premises and other properties in Zhejiang and Hubei provinces, and Chongqing City.
The gang’s alleged ringleader evaded capture, however, and is being sought by police.
Besides the gang members, the raids netted nine prostitutes, who were later punished, and 17 of their clients who also faced charges, police said, without elaborating.
The group is accused of operating via online chat rooms and the QQ instant messaging service.
Police in Changning District said they began investigating the alleged vice in March after monitoring “suspicious activity” on a QQ account.
