13 injured after city bus hits car, slams into wall
THIRTEEN people were injured yesterday — three seriously — when a bus careened head-on into a car travelling in the opposite direction on Henan Road N., near the intersection with Haining Road, police and witnesses said.
After hitting the car, the No. 78 bus smashed into a wall.
East Radio News quoted a passenger as saying the driver bent down to pick up a glass, ignoring warnings from passengers, and lost control.
The manager of a nearby fast-food shop, a man surnamed Fu, said that the woman bus driver’s face was covered with blood after the accident.
Shanghai General Hospital, where the injured were rushed to for treatment, said three were more seriously injured with pelvic fractures and head and stomach injuries. Four of the injured were admitted to the hospital and the others were released by last night, hospital staff said.
Fu said that about 12:55pm, the north-bound bus suddenly turned left and knocked down the metal dividing fence in the middle of the eight-lane road.
“The car hit by the bus was thrown to the curb-side,” he said. “The car was badly damaged, but the driver was not injured.”
Younger passengers escaped through the windows after the bus became trapped against the wall, but older passengers could not get out, Fu said.
Police said they were investigating.
