Wet today, but weekend set to be dry

THE final weekend of August is expected to be drier than others of late, though the rain is set to return on Monday, the first day of September, forecasters said yesterday.

Thunderstorms are on the cards for today, as the high temperature falls to 27 degrees Celsius, while tomorrow and Sunday will be mostly cloudy and overcast as a result of a subtropical high.

Some brief showers are likely on both days, however.

The mercury is likely to fluctuate between 23 and 30 degrees from today through Monday, while Tuesday is likely to be warmer, with a high of between 30 and 32.

According to the National Meteorological Center, no typhoons made landfall in August. Since 1949 that has happened only three times, with the previous occasions being in 1983 and 2010.

The annual average for the month is six, said Qian Chuanhai, an official at the China Meteorological Administration, though 10 were recorded in both August 1960 and August 1966.

There are many possible reasons for the lack of typhoons this year, including the arrival of El Nino, which always reduces the number of cyclones in the northwest Pacific, Qian said.

However, the possibility of typhoons in September cannot be ruled out and if they do appear, they are likely to be much stronger, he said.
