Weekend set to be warmer, but rain to fall

SHANGHAI yesterday recorded its coldest day of the winter, as the temperature at the benchmark Xujiahui weather station fell to minus 1.2 degrees Celsius under the influence of a strong cold front.

In Chongming County, an unofficial low of minus 4 degrees was recorded, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Today is expected to be cloudy and overcast, with temperatures set to range from a low of 3 degrees to a high of 12, the forecasters said.

Tomorrow will be slightly warmer, with the low unlikely to fall below 8 degrees, though there is a strong chance of rain in most areas.

The recent drop in temperatures led to an expected increase in the number of people seeking medical assistance at the city’s hospitals.

The Shanghai 10th People’s Hospital of Tongji University said it had received about 15 percent more outpatients over the past two days, with infections of the upper respiratory tract being the most common ailment.

Similarly, the Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital said it had witnessed a 20 percent rise in patients with weather-related problems, including strokes and chest pains.

An official from the Shanghai Ren-ai Hospital advised people, especially the elderly, to wear face masks when going out in the cold weather to protect their lungs.
