Warm weather greets Shanghai on first day of the New Year

SHANGHAI welcomed the first day of the Year of the Monkey with warm weather but there was light pollution as well. Some parts of the city were blanketed in smog early in the morning.

It was a chilly, sunny morning today with the mercury plummeting to a low of 1.7 degrees Celsius in downtown and below freezing point in the suburbs. A high of 13 degrees is expected in the afternoon.

The sunny skies are expected to last until Wednesday, followed by two or three days of rain.

The Air Quality Index, which began climbing from 7pm on Sunday, peaked at 172, or moderately polluted, at 8am today. It fell to 118, meaning lightly polluted, by noon.
