Warm reception for Putuo’s cool sharing fridges

THE sharing fridge in Puxiong Community of Putuo District has been welcomed by residents since opening last Sunday, volunteers said, though some people were shy about claiming free food.

Another sharing fridge, which is operated by a restaurant on Xikang Road, also in Putuo District, said most of its customers were nearby construction or sanitation workers. This fridge opened late last month.

Despite concerns that food would be snatched up as soon as it was offered, neither of the Putuo fridges has encountered any such problems so far.

“We opened at 8:30am and the last pastry was collected at about 11:30am today,” said Peng Hongjun, a volunteer at Puxiong Community said. “This morning, there were nine pastries in the fridge.

“Some elderly residents asked us sheepishly if they can collect the food as they are not of low income,” Peng said. He added some people had even come from far away to see the fridge as a result of media coverage.

The community serves about 30 shares of food a day from the fridge. The amount depends on how much leftovers are provided from a local restaurant, which typically donates 30 servings of food a day, or stock from two supermarkets that the community is cooperating with.

The sharing fridge in front of the restaurant on Xikang Road also has restricted opening hours. A restaurant employee will occasionally check the fridge and a security camera has been set up to help to allay any safety concerns.

“Anyone can pick what food they wish,” said Tan Jun, manager with Douyue Restaurant.
