Typhoon set to put end to hot spell
TYPHOON Matmo, which is approaching Taiwan, may bring an end to the current heatwave later this week if it makes landfall in Fujian Province and keeps moving north, forecasters said yesterday.
With the high topping 35 degrees Celsius, the local weather bureau issued a third-level yellow high temperature alert at 1pm yesterday.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau also said it’s going to be a scorcher today too, advising residents to keep out of the midday sun.
But if Typhoon Matmo comes this way, Shanghai may see cooler weather through to the weekend, with the return of rain and thunder and lightning.
The highest temperatures will dip a bit, ranging between 33 and 34 degrees during the rest of the week, climbing back to 35 degrees on Saturday.
Typhoon Matmo, this summer’s 10th named typhoon, was reported centered about 870 kilometers southeast of Taipei, at the northern tip of Taiwan, at 5pm yesterday and was heading toward Taiwan’s eastern coastal areas.
It is forecast to land there around dusk today and make its way to Fujian or Zhejiang Province after that, according to the National Meteorological Center.
Although it would bring heavy rains, Matmo is not expected to have any serious effects if it reaches Shanghai, said forecasters.
July is cooler than the same period last year, the bureau said. By July 20 this summer Shanghai had only seen two high temperature days — when the high exceeds 35 degrees — compared to 14 last year.
This difference can be attribute the stronger subtropical high last year and more wet days after the plum rain season this year, said forecasters.
