Trees shade Braille maps from sun

TREES have been planted to shade metal Braille guide maps in parks in Xuhui District, after complaints that they were too hot to touch on scorching days.

Action was taken after a visually impaired primary school student wrote that she was burned while touching a stainless steel map at Kangjian Park during hot weather, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The student suggested that umbrellas should shade the maps or the material should be changed.

Greenery authorities in Xuhui said the steel was more durable than other materials so decided to plant trees beside the maps in some 10 parks.

Other people with visual impairments had also complained. Zhang Liwei, who is blind, said he was also burned by the maps.

“The stainless steel plates are too hot to touch and lose their function as a result,” he said.

Some 74,000 people with permanent residency permits in Shanghai have visual impairments — a quarter of people with disabilities among residents with permits.
