Train change likely on unpopular route

THE operators of the Jinshan Railway bullet train service between Shanghai South and Jinshanwei in southwest Jinshan District, are considering introducing new trains next year in a bid to turn around their ailing fortunes.

The company currently uses CRH2A trains, which have a top speed of 250km/h, even though the speed limit on the 56 kilometer route is just 160km/h.

“A new type of bullet train with a top speed of 160kph is going through trials, and will be ready next year,” Xiang Baoyu, general manager of the operating company, told thepaper.cn.

“We plan to introduce them to help cut costs,” he said.

The problem for the company is a lack of passengers.

According to Xiang, the two trains that leave the terminal at Jinshanwei Station are packed on weekday mornings, while those leaving from Shanghai South during the evening rush hour are equally busy.

But at all other times, they are almost empty, he said.
