Traffic restrictions in place for National Day holiday

SHANGHAI traffic authorities have announced road restrictions from September 30 to October 3 to deal with the expected jams and a jump in tourist numbers during the National Day holiday.

The restrictions will be in place from 3:30pm to 11:30pm, but police warned that both the time and areas of traffic restrictions could be changed depending on the situation.

Vehicles will be off limits near People’s Square, the Bund and in some parts of Lujiazui as highlighted in red on the map (right).

Mopeds and bicycles will also not be allowed on the Bund area marked in blue on the map.

Metro station shut

Nanjing Road E. Station on Metro Line 2 and 10 will be shut during the restricted hours.

Police have also decided to close the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, while the ferry transportation from Dongchang Road to Jinling Road E. will be suspended if necessary.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Station on Metro Line 2 will also adjust its entry and exit points for the Shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival, on September 30, October 3 and October 6.

The Century Avenue and Huamu stations might also be forced to take traffic control measures depending on the crowd, the city’s Metro operator said yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai railway is expecting a record number of tourists on October 1 judging from the ticket sales so far.

It is estimated that Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station will receive over 500,000 visitors on the day, setting a new record.

“Usually such a record crowd is seen during the Spring Festival period, so we are surprised to find that we’ll have an unprecedented number of visitors for the National Day holiday this time,” Lin Ronggui, a public relations officer of Shanghai Railway Police, said.

Police will add luggage checking machines and security gates at the stations and arrange for manual checks if extra machines are not available.

They will add more forces to monitor entrances to the railway stations, tunnels, escalators and the trains to prevent stampedes.

Metro Line 2 services from the Pudong International Airport to downtown People’s Square will be extended on October 6 and 7 as the holiday crowd heads back.

Three trains will be added after Line 2’s regular service ends. They will depart Pudong airport station at 10:20pm, 10:40pm and 11pm and stop only at Chuansha, Guanglan Road, Century Avenue and People Square stations.
