Temple in WeChat free entry initiative

SMARTPHONE owners can get free entry to the city’s Jing’an Temple, if they follow the Buddhist landmark on the WeChat messaging app.

Anyone subscribed to the temple’s account for at least six months can receive a free electronic ticket every month from next month — though not for peak dates on Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first lunar month.

Admission to the temple is normally 50 yuan (US$8.10).

“Nowadays, an increasing number of people are using WeChat, so we thought of this idea, and also want to use the free tickets to express our gratitude for the support of society,” said Master Yayun of Jing’an Temple.

The offer, which was quickly circulated on WeChat, has drawn mixed reactions.

Some hailed the initiative as a good move.

“The e-ticket is eco-friendly and the offer helps spread Buddhism,” said Joyce Lu, who visits the temple every year with family members.

But other WeChat users were more skeptical about the offer.

“It sounds more like an online promotion campaign, which surprises me,” said white-collar worker Jiang Jingxian.

Previously, temples in the city, such as Jing’an Temple and the Jade Buddha Temple, gave free admission only to Buddhists who were holders of that temple’s certificate.

While other temples in the city also have a WeChat presence, so far only Jing’an Temple is offering the free tickets to the public.
