Sunny and hot for the dragon boats

IT will be sunny, dry and hot over the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

According to Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the mercury will continue to climb, with temperatures today ranging from 19 to 28 degrees Celsius. The high will touch 31 degrees over the weekend.

Residents are, however, warned of big temperature differences — over 10 degrees — between morning and night. The scorching weather will continue next week though it is expected to turn cloudy.

Sunday marks the first day of the three-day Dragon Boat Festival, an event that dates back about 2,500 years. It’s a festival tradition to eat zong zi, a glutinous rice wrapped in reed leaves to commemorate the ancient poet Qu Yuan.

Residents choosing to visit nearby cities or towns over the holiday are warned of possible light air pollution that may hit the Yangtze River Delta areas on Sunday, including Shanghai and major cities in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces.
