Summer care scheme aims to offer more places in 2017

ORGANIZERS of the Love Summer Care camp, a popular government program that provides childcare services for working parents during the holiday, said they will look at ways to expand it.

“After three years of improvement, this year’s program served about 40,000 primary school students, double the number we had last summer,” said Xu Su, head of the Department of School Affairs at the Shanghai Committee of the China Communist Youth League, which is coordinating the program.

“But the current capacity still does not meet the tremendous demand in a city with more than 700,000 primary school students,” he added.

This year’s camp kicked off in mid-July and ended yesterday.

Initiated in 2014, the program is popular among working parents who struggle to look after their children during the summer holiday, and there is fierce competition for places, which are usually snapped up within hours.

The charge is very attractive—600 yuan (US$90) for three weeks.

In addition to looking after children during the day while their parents work, volunteers teach them how to paint, play musical instruments and play various sports.

Traffic police and firefighters also take part in the program, teaching children about traffic and fire safety.

Li Hui, a mother from Yangpu District, said she felt lucky that her daughter was able to attend it twice.

“This is the second year for me to send my eldest daughter to the camp as I have to work while my parents look after my younger baby,” said Li. “Even if my parents can look after her, I prefer the camp as she can make friends, expand her horizons and learn something there.”

This year’s program encompassed 413 locations, including 53 children’s palaces and 122 schools, according to the committee.

More than 100,000 volunteers took part in this year’s operation, including 420 young teachers.
