Subway Line 18 breaks ground

CONSTRUCTION of Metro Line 18 has commenced, its operator announced yesterday.

The line, which will run through Baoshan, Yangpu and the Pudong New Area, is scheduled for completion in 2020. The first phase will run from Hangtou to Changjiang Road South.

Altogether the line will be 36 kilometers long and have 26 stations. It will provide direct connections to Lines 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 16, and the Maglev service at Longyang Road.

Once completed — in four years’ time — Line 16 will “take some of the pressure off Lines 3, 8 and 10,” especially in the densely populated areas along Jiangpu and Pingliang roads in Yangpu, an anonymous company official said.

Once operational, the line will also support the commercial development of the Wujiaochang area in Yangpu and Hangtou Town, where many of the Shanghai’s affordable houses are being built, according to the city’s top planning agency.
