Songjiang to have trams by year end

THE T2 tram line in Songjiang District will become operational by the end of the year, the district’s governor Qin Jian said yesterday.

Two tram lines are under construction in the central streets of suburban Songjiang. The 15-kilometer long T2 line will be put on trial run in December. A new 33-meter-long, five-carriage electric tramcar will be used on both T1 and T2. It will have a capacity for 300 people and will run at a maximum speed of 70 kilometers.

The lines will have their own tracks.

With 19 stops, T2 will start at Rongle Road W. and travel along Sanxin Road N., New Songjiang Road, Renmin Road N., Meijiabang Road, Jiasong Road S. and Guangfulin Road.

Stops on Zhongchuang and Jinxi roads are in the plans but not confirmed as yet. The line ends at Rongle Road E.

The tram lines are part of the district’s big transport plans. Songjiang expects more than half of its residents to travel by public transportation rather than private cars by 2020.

Qin said the tramcar will be about 5km per hour faster than buses as it does not have to stop at intersections.

T1 is also expected to be completed within a year. It will run 14.4 kilometers and have 20 stops.

An earlier report said Songjiang will own six tramlines in five years — all linked to Metro lines.
