Smart transport firm will seek traffic answers

SHANGHAI yesterday established an “intelligent transport” company to improve the city’s traffic efficiency and relieve congestion.

It aims to achieve this through a series of high-tech traffic management systems.

Shanghai Intelligent Transportation Co based in Yangpu District will initially develop a monitoring system on local expressways and roads to record and analyze vehicle flows.

Using “big data analysis,” the company will develop various vehicle management systems to improve traffic conditions, said Chang Guangzhao, the new company’s general manager.

An automatic system, for instance, will be developed to control the city’s traffic lights and convertible lanes according to real-time traffic conditions.

“The current traffic lights and convertible lanes are controlled according to preset time, but the new system can analyze the real-time vehicle flows and shift the traffic signals automatically,” Chang told Shanghai Daily.

He said the system was expected to greatly improve traffic efficiency and resolve congestion woes especially during rush hours.

The company was jointly founded by Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co, the builder of the city’s subway network, the state-owned CRRC Corp. — the nation’s top train maker — and the Beijing-based Internet company Transinfo.

“The intelligent traffic management systems are key to the future development of a metropolis like Shanghai and the innovative practices of the city will be expanded to other cities around the world,” said Chen Xiaohong, a professor with the College of Transportation Engineering at Tongji University.

Another major task of the company was to integrate the resources from different companies on road and bridge planning, construction and operation, to find and solve various problems, Chang said.

“Currently, the traffic planning body, construction companies and operators are working separately, which can hardly improve the city’s traffic conditions,” he said.

The city’s bridges and tunnels, for instance, were either congested or had too few vehicles using them during rush hours, while the company aims to avoid such a problem through “big data” analysis and information technology, he added.

The new company signed an agreement with China Unicom, one of the nation’s three telecom carriers, to cooperate on the information technology for the intelligent traffic systems. It also signed cooperative agreements with Tongji University and Yangpu District government.

Yangpu District would fully support the scientific researches of the company and would serve as an experimental place for the innovative traffic systems, said Wang Zhen, deputy director of the district.
