Big matchmaking event adds areas for overseas returnees, parents

SHANGHAI’S largest matchmaking event will take place on May 24 and 25 in Qingpu District, with two newly added areas set aside this year for single overseas returnees and parents who worry about their children’s single status.

Organizers of the 5th Shanghai Matchmaking Expo said they purposely picked a weekend near May 20, which sounds like "I love you" in Chinese.

Singles may attend free, while parents are charged 50 yuan (US$8.02) each.

In China, overseas returnees can have difficulty finding a partner because they often are older than what’s considered an ideal marrying age — the women may be older than 28 years old, for example. The woman also may have a good education, so their requirements for a potential spouse are higher, said Zhou Juemin, director of the Shanghai Matchmaking Association, the organizers.

Some anxious parents have called the association for their children — even when they are still young adults, born after 1990.

Singles aged below 40 years are eligible to apply at 48 matchmaking agencies and online between Friday and May 15.

The Shanghai Matchmaking Expo was first held in Songjiang District in 2011.

It has attracted 150,000 participants since its launch, said organizers.

Also, at the same venue and time, the city's first Home Service Expo will take place. It highlights domestic help services, senior care services and maternal and baby care services, will take place at the same venue and the same time.
