Shows told to improve their math
SHANGHAI’S transport authorities and the operators of the Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Center said yesterday they will urge exhibition organizers to improve the accuracy of their visitor number estimates after the staging of three medical fairs last weekend caused chaos.
Shanghai Expo Co, which runs the National Exhibition and Convention Center, also said it will launch a mobile phone application and add more signs inside the center to help visitors navigate.
Reed Sinopharm, which organized last weekend’s health care events, estimated that they would attract 110,000 visitors on their first day, which was Friday. The actual number was 173,000, said Wang Zhiping, chairman of Shanghai Expo.
One unnamed visitor said he had to walk for three hours in the rain to get to a bus stop, while another said he had to queue for almost two hours to get inside the subway at East Xujing Station on Line 2.
Other unnamed people complained of the perceived lack of signs, parking spaces and catering services.
“This was the first time the fairs were held in Shanghai and the first time all three were held at the same venue at the same time,” said Wang.
“As a result, the estimates were totally wrong. Visitor numbers were about 50 percent higher than we expected, so the support services provided by the government were insufficient.”
The Shanghai Transport Commission said it will speak to exhibition organizers to improve the accuracy of visitor number estimates and adjust its support services accordingly.
Wang said the government should provide more bus services to the center.
Shanghai Expo said it is developing a smartphone app that will help people navigate the center. It should be ready this September, when the venue will host a furniture show.
