Shanghai sun to keep shining despite autumn’s fall

OFFICIALS from the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau yesterday declared that the autumn season started last week — see the foot of this story for an explanation of their calculation methods — but it appears no one mentioned the matter to the sun gods.

After managing a high of just 22 degrees Celsius yesterday, the mercury is expected to rise to 24-25 degrees today and tomorrow, before continuing northwards to a balmy 25-26 degrees on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The corresponding lows will be in the region of 15 degrees, the forecasters said.

Unfortunately, the smog that shrouded large parts of the city yesterday morning, before dissipating in the afternoon, is expected to return today, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.

The pollution was attributed to a lack of wind, which helps to disperse harmful particles such as PM2.5, the density of which hit nearly 110 micrograms per cubic meter yesterday, far above the “safe” level of 25 set by the World Health Organization.

The air quality index peaked at 143 at 9am on the day.

Meanwhile, for those who like to know the official start dates of the year’s seasons, autumn 2015 began on Thursday, October 8.

The announcement was made yesterday by officials from the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, which determines the date retrospectively after recording a run of five consecutive days on which the high temperature is less than 22 degrees.

The first day of that sequence is then deemed to be the first day of autumn.
