Scorching temperatures forecast this week

SHANGHAI had its first “high temperature” day of the year yesterday, with the benchmark Xujiahui weather station recording 36.5 degrees Celsius.

And there will be no relief from the sizzling weather this week, with the mercury reaching 38 degrees.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow high temperature alert, the lowest of a three-tier warning, after 11:20am for temperatures in excess of the official high temperature mark of 35 degrees.

At 1pm, downtown Xujiahui station recorded 35.4 degrees, under the influence of a subtropical high pressure front, and the mercury climbed higher after that.

The bureau also issued a yellow alert for thunder — the lowest of three levels — just after 2:30pm .

In Huinan Town in Pudong New Area, more than 72 millimeters of rain fell between 2pm and 3:30pm.

Scorching temperatures will continue this week, said Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the bureau.

Today will be overcast with thundershowers in the afternoon and temperatures reaching 36 degrees.

Air quality should be fine to lightly polluted this morning, with PM2.5 particles the major pollutant, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Ozone will be the main pollutant in the afternoon, when the air will be slightly polluted, added the center.

Tomorrow should be cloudy with similar temperatures to today, the bureau said.

Temperatures may reach 38 degrees on Wednesday, officials added. Thursday should be sunny, with the high 36 degrees, while it will be 1 degree higher on Friday.
