Road rules to change during work on tunnel

A few changes to traffic management on Yanggao Road S. in Pudong will be implemented from Saturday when work on a six-lane tunnel underneath it is due to start, police said yesterday.

The tunnel, linking the bridge over Pujian Road in the south with the underpass at Century Avenue in the north, is an ambitious project that is expected to significantly improve traffic flow on Yanggao Road between Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge by eliminating traffic lights.

Police predict more congestion on the already busy street during the construction project, but hope the new plan will alleviate it in future.

During the first phase of the project, which will run from this weekend to February next year, left turns from Eshan Road and Huamu Road to Yanggao Road S. will be banned, and vehicles traveling from west to east on Huamu Road will be prohibited from making U-turns at Jinkang Road. This is because a ramp will be built near Huamu Road, which will occupy parts of the crossroads of both streets with Yanggao Road S.

“We encourage car drivers to avoid this part of Yanggao Road and use nearby streets, and if bike riders have to take left turns on the crossroads, they’ll have to take ‘right-angle’ turns or two turns,” said Guo Hengming, a senior engineer from Pudong Traffic Police.

Meanwhile, medium- to large-sized trucks will be banned from using that part of Yanggao Road from 7am to 9am and from 4pm to 7pm every day.

Currently about 6,000 motor vehicles travel along Yanggao Road S. from Pujian Road to Century Avenue every hour during peak hours, making it one of the busiest thoroughfares in Pudong, according to police statistics.

Tens of thousands of people are employed at Lujiazui Software Park at Eshan Road and Yanggao Road S. and on the other side are the Pudong administrative center and residential complexes.

While Yanggao Road S. now has eight to ten motor lanes, the entire project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2018, will reduce the number of lanes to four to six and the rest will be green space.

A few skyscrapers housing finance companies, part of the Shanghai International Finance Center, are being constructed along Yanggao Road S. and the Pudong branch of Shanghai Museum will also be located there.
