Road restrictions in place for New Year’s Eve

SHANGHAI police have announced traffic restrictions on some of the roads in the Bund and Xintiandi areas for New Year’s Eve on Thursday evening.

This year there will be no countdown to ring in the New Year at the Bund, Shanghai government spokesperson Xu Wei confirmed yesterday. Xu advised citizens, who were still keen on going to the waterfront, to maintain order and cooperate with law enforcement officials.

On New Year’s Eve last year, 36 revelers died in a crush at the crowded Bund area. This year, the Huangpu District government has installed 38 cameras to monitor the area. If the crowd becomes uncontrollable, roads in the vicinity are likely to be cordoned off.

Areas within the red line in the map (right) will be off limits for vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Dongjin Line ferry service linking Dongchang Road and Jinling Road E. ferry stations, and the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel linking the Lujiazui and the Bund will also stop service early at 8pm on Thursday.

Activities at Xintiandi will be restricted to 4,800 participants. Some shopping malls, like the No. 1 Yaohan Department Store in Pudong and the Shanghai New World Department Store on Nanjing Road E. will hold overnight promotional activities.

The number of visitors will also be restricted at the historic Longhua Temple, which will hold its traditional bell-tolling ceremony to welcome the New Year. The temple will sell 6,000 tickets for the evening event amid safety concerns.

Meanwhile, some roads in downtown Jing’an District will be closed on Friday morning for the Jing’an New Year Run. The event will feature 5,000 participants, who will be flagged off from Jing’an Park at 7am. The runners will cover a distance of 4.2 kilometers that will take them through Nanjing Road W., Shimen No. 2 Road, Hengfeng Road, Chang’an Road and Maling Road before ending at Shanghai Railway Station.
