Rain back ... and staying all week

A WET week ahead is forecast, with rain set to return tonight as a trough of low pressure arrives over the city.

A cold front is also making its way to the city and from Wednesday will send temperatures down to single digits, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau yesterday.

After the heavy downpours of Friday and Saturday, today will be dry like yesterday. It will be sunny and warmer than recently, with the high reaching 12 degrees Celsius.

But light showers are forecast for tonight, though these will lessen by morning and later peter out. A high of 13 degrees and a low of 6 degrees are forecast tomorrow.

Rain will be back Wednesday, with the mercury dropping to a high of 8 degrees as the arriving cold front dominates the city weather.

And this wet spell is expected to last through Saturday, with temperatures ranging between 4 and 8 degrees.

After six days of good air, according to the city Air Quality Index, the dry and milder weather yesterday saw pollution levels reach moderately polluted, with the index climbing to 155 at 6pm.

The concentration of tiny PM2.5 particles, which are especially harmful as the get deep into the respiratory system, hit 120 micrograms per cubic meter at around the same time.

This is nearly five times the figure considered safe by the World Health Organization.

According to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, there will be light smog this morning but southeasterly winds will disperse this in the afternoon.

Friday marks the traditional Chinese solar term Jingzhe — the awakening of insects.

According to folklore, during Jingzhe thunderstorms will wake up hibernating insects, implying that the weather is getting warmer.
