Pudong airport to boost passenger capacity
A MAJOR project to increase passenger capacity at Pudong International Airport’s Terminal 1 by 80 percent is set to get under way this year, the Shanghai Airport Authority said yesterday.
With the addition of a whole new floor, the capacity at the terminal will rise to 36 million passengers a year, from 20 million now, Wang Jijie, the authority’s deputy president, told a press conference.
The renovations, which are scheduled to finish by the end of next year, will also help to speed up transfers through the airport.
With the launch of the city’s 72-hour visa-free policy, the number of transfer passengers visiting Shanghai is expected to rise to more than 10 million a year, Wang said.
“While visitors to the terminal during the renovations might have to put up with the smell of paint or some construction noise, their travel plans will not be disrupted,” he said.
The upgrades at Pudong will also include a 500,000-square-meter satellite terminal building to the south of the existing terminals. The facility will include 119 gates, adding to the 70 at Terminals 1 and 2, Wang said.
By 2020, with renovations and new additions, Pudong airport will be able to handle 80 million passengers and 4.7 million tons of cargo per year, he said.
Meanwhile, at Hongqiao International Airport, construction of a second terminal building will get under way and a fourth runway will go into service before the year-end, Wang said.
At 3,800 meters, the fourth runway will be able to cope with the world’s largest commercial aircraft, the Airbus 380. A fifth runway, measuring 3,400m is already under construction.
By 2020, the passenger capacity of Shanghai’s two airports will be 120 million, Wang said.
