Power company offers free boost for e-car rentals

REGISTERED users of the EVcARD electric-car rental service can now charge their vehicles for free at three service centers owned and operated by State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power co.

The charging points are at the crossroads of Dingxiang and Jindai roads in the Pudong New Area, on Huashi Road close to the electric car demonstration zone, and at the North Plaza of Shanghai Railway Station, the power company said.

The centers can also be used by the owners of electric cars who are not part of the rental scheme, though charges will apply, it said.

Fast charging costs 1.60 yuan (25 US cents) per kilowatt-hour, while the slower option costs 0.80 yuan per kWh.

Du chenggang, director of smart electricity utilization at State Grid, said the power company chose to go into partnership with EVcARD as a way to promote the benefits of driving environmentally friendly cars and accelerate infrastructure development.

This year alone, the company plans to instal a further 4,000 charging poles, and open 229 charging stations within the city limits and 22 on intercity highways, Du said.

The EVcARD system, which operates through a smartphone app, was launched in 2014 in suburban Jiading District, but has since been extended to several downtown areas and chongming Island.
