Polluted air today and more rain till Friday
SHORT-TIME moderate air pollution is expected in Shanghai today due to light winds and high humidity.
The environmental monitoring center said the situation should ease from tomorrow thanks to a southeast wind that will usher in cleaner air from the sea.
The city encountered a round of moderate air pollution yesterday, with the average air quality index reaching 156, or moderately polluted, at 2pm.
PM2.5, tiny particles in the air that are hazardous to health, was the major pollutant.
The density of the fine particulate matter reached 180 micrograms per cubic meter in districts of Yangpu and Hongkou by 3pm — over seven times the World Health Organization’s recommended standard of 25 micrograms per cubic meter within a 24-hour period.
According to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, light wind and humid weather encouraged the accumulation of local pollutants.
The average AQI is forecast to be between 130 and 150, or slightly polluted, this morning, though short-time moderate pollution (AQI between 151 and 200) can still be expected in some areas.
The city entered the plum rain season last week and Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said wet conditions would continue throughout the week.
It will be overcast or cloudy, and there will be thunder and showers until Friday, with temperatures between 23 and 29 degrees Celsius.
On Friday, the highest temperature will rise to 30 degrees, and will climb to 32 degrees on Saturday.
