Pointing Metro passengers in right direction

CHANGES are afoot — or rather underfoot — on Metro Line 8, with arrows projected on the ground replacing stickers directing passengers to transfers.

Two projectors — similar to those used by shops to project an ad or logo onto the sidewalk — have been installed at the transfer tunnel at Hongkou Football Stadium Station.

Shanghai Metro No. 4 Operative Co, which manages the line, says these are flexible as the direction can be changed, and are not subject to everyday wear and tear.

They will also be rolled out at other Line 8 stations, including China Art Museum, Oriental Sports Center, Lujiabang Road, said officials.

Sticker arrows need to be repaired or changed every six months, said Zhang Yue, an operations official with Shanghai Metro No. 4 Operative.

The new system also provides more flexibility, said the official.

“When there are special occasions creating a big crowd at a station, a one-way passenger flow will often be introduced, which might go against the fixed sticker signs,” said Zhang.

Zhang said projectors cost 2,000 yuan (US$322) each and will prove cost-effective.

Shanghai Shentong Group, operator of the whole subway network, said the projectors are still being trialed.
