Plum rain season arrives in city

THE plum rain season is set to begin in the city today, so keep those umbrellas handy, forecasters said yesterday.

Announcing the official start of the rainy season, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said this was 13 days later than last year, though only three days later than average.

Plum rain season — mei yu ji in Chinese — is defined as starting on the first day of a five-day period when it rains on four days out of the five. This must be preceded by three out of five days when average temperatures exceeded 22 degrees Celsius.

As temperatures have been above this recently and rain is forecast for the next few days, Shanghai is set to herald mei yu ji today.

In fact, the city will see downpours over the next few days as cold and warm air meets in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, said Zhang Ruiyi, a chief service officer at the bureau.

Shanghai is to the north of the rain belt and will experience more rain, she added.

An easterly wind will keep temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius, but increased humidity will make conditions less comfortable, said Zhang.

Today should be overcast with showers expected, and temperatures will range between 23 and 28 degrees.

Heavy rain with some thunder and lightning are expected across Shanghai tomorrow, with torrential downpours forecast in the south of the city, the bureau said.

Sunday will be overcast with rain, with the temperature hovering between 23 degrees and 26 degrees.

From Monday to Wednesday, overcast conditions will dominate the city sky, with rain forecast.

Monday should be overcast with showers, with the temperature ranging between 22 degrees and 25 degrees.

Tuesday is predicted to be cloudy, with showers in some areas. The temperature should be the same, the bureau said.

And from late Thursday to Friday, the city will experience yet more rain,  added officials.

Students sit the high school entrance examination over the weekend and forecasters advised them to leave plenty of time as the rain is likely to affect city traffic.
