PTU to patrol Pudong to tackle violent crimes

THE Pudong New Area will have a police tactical unit (PTU), or a paramilitary riot control unit, in place from January 1 next year to tackle possible terrorism and violent incidents in the district.

The unit will have 127 officers who will be split into 20 teams. Each team will have six members who will be aided by a special PTU van. They will be armed with revolvers, riot guns, radio transmitters, panoramic cameras besides shields and batons.

The unit displayed its capabilities in a drill in front of the Oriental Pearl Tower yesterday.

The first act involved a knife attack at a bus stop.

A “terrorist” suddenly starts to attack passengers. Within seconds, the nearest PTU van arrives at the scene. The six officers approach the man in pairs with one of them holding a shield and a baton while the other carried a gun.

Three officers then overpower the man while the other three offer “first aid” to injured pedestrians.

In the second incident, a mentally ill patient assaults people in a residential complex.

Two officers with riot shields stand facing the man and tries to distract him. Another two officers stand behind his back while two more hold two-pronged spears and a long baton.

The one carrying the long baton hits the patient in his leg. As he falls down, the other two officers bring him under control by binding his hands and feet.

The PTU group will patrol the streets in Pudong along with the regular police forces from next month.
