Off-ramp to be built to reduce congestion

THE city plans to build a new off-ramp on South-North Elevated Road to make better use of Shanghai Railway Station’s North Square and ease congestion nearby, officials said yesterday.

The 419-meter ramp will connect Gonghexin Road Overpass with Zhongxing Road near Datong Road.

Zhongxing Road and Gonghexin Road will also undergo reconstruction work covering 740 meters to accommodate the project.

A second phase of environmental evaluation of the project is underway.

The planned ramp will help to divert traffic on Tianmu Road Overpass, one of the most congested places in the area, as the overpass connects the elevated road and roads nearby.

There is quite a high volume of traffic to the railway station’s South Square via the overpass, thepaper.cn reported.

To divert overpass traffic, the ramp will be situated close to the station’s North Square, which is underused because more than 70 percent of the station’s traffic passes via the South Square, the report added.
