Now get your favorite watermelons couriered to you

IN a move that will be welcomed by local farmers, the China Post Express Mail Service has agreed to deliver easily breakable fruits like watermelons from this month.

The state-owned mail delivery service is cooperating with Pudong New Area’s Agricultural Association in the venture to support local farmers.

Watermelons from the suburban Nanhui area is treasured for its sweet and juicy taste, particularly the famous “8424 Watermelons.” But the juicy fruits were often damaged during transportation.

“There are very few delivery companies who were willing to transport watermelons. Even if they did, it often worked out expensive,” said Pan Lingying, a manager with a local fruit cooperative, Tuoyuan Farm.

Pan said it would cost about 28 yuan (US$4.25) to deliver four watermelons from the suburban farmland to downtown areas. With EMS, it would only cost 16 yuan.

“This is good news to the farmers as it cuts costs,” Pan said.

Other vegetables and fruits, including peaches, will also be delivered by China Mail.
